EASTERN BRONZE "EGYPTIAN WOMAN WITH A FAN ADDED TO A COLUMN ENGRAVED WITH HIEROGLYPHES BY Gaston Veuvenot LEROUX (1854-1942) Very nice sculpture with a brown patina. Signed on the column H: 89, 5 cm Gaston Veunevot was brought up by his maternal grandparents, a restaurateur on rue des Bons-Enfants in Paris, and in 1866 he joined his mother in Vienna to continue his studies. In 1874, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna where he was trained as a sculptor. In August 1881, in the sculpture section of the École des beaux-arts de Paris where he was a pupil of François Jouffroy. From 1893, he teaches as a professor of statuary at the École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux. At the same time, he is the official statuary of the City of Bordeaux, and as such, he carries out numerous commissions, including the tombs of the cardinals at Saint-André Cathedral, war memorials, and a large number of busts, notably those of the mayors of Bordeaux. Gaston Leroux regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in Paris where he obtained, among others, an honourable mention at the 1882 and 1883 salons; a medal for the 3rd cassia at the 1885 salon and a bronze medal at the 1889 and 1900 universal exhibitions.
