ANCIENT PHOTOGRAPHIES: HINDOUSTAN - KHEMARY - HIMALAYA - IMPORTANT ALBUM of 152 PHOTOGRAPHS laminated, of the English photographer SAMUEL BOURNE (active in INDIA from 1863 to 1870). Format of the photos 28.8 x 23.7 and 21.8 x 16.2 cm. Format of the album 40 x 33 cm. Bank employee with a passion for photography, Samuel Bourne, (1834-1912), gave up his job and left England in 1863 to settle in India, where he joined forces with Charles Sheperd and created the first photography studio in Simla in 1863. He stayed there until 1870 and organised the first photographic expeditions to the Himalayas, Kashmir and the source of the Ganges. The collection includes photographs of Calcutta (about 40, views of the city, shops and traders, palanquin makers, plant garden), Agra, Temples, ruins, tombs and tourist sites (about 50), Himalayan landscapes (about 20), the city of Kashmir (about 10), and artistic compositions (lakeside, Ganges, Benares). In-fine, 2 photos of a Buddhist Monastery in Burma and 16 shots of local people have been added. 31 photographs are signed (mainly; views of Agra, some artistic compositions and 15 of the Himalayas and Kashmir), in the order of the album the signed pictures are: n° 42, 43, 50, 51, 52, 54, 57, 58, 61, 62, 69, 71, 111, 112, 113, 114, 123, 125, 126, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135, 136, 140, 142, 143, 146, 147 and 148. Ses oeuvres ont été exposées au Musée Guimet, Paris, lors de l'Exposition – L’Inde, au miroir des photographes du 06 novembre 2019 au 23 mars 2020. Rough binding (first cover partially detached), a few slightly dusty photos and rough corners on about ten shots. Rare together.
