Jean DREYFUS-STERN
TABLE "VIEW OF A LAKE FROM A TERRACE" by Jean DREYFUS-STERN (1890-1969) Oil on canvas signed lower left 33 x 46 cm Jean Dreyfus-Stern, was born as Jean Maurice Dreyfus in the 10th arrondissement of Paris on December 20, 1890. Attracted to painting at a very early age, Jean Dreyfus-Stern became a pupil of Charles-François-Prosper Guérin (for painting) and Bernard Naudin (for engraving) before attending the Colarossi Academy and the workshops of Maurice Denis and Antoine Bourdelle. A member of the Salon d'automne since 1920 and the Salon des indépendants since 1923, he also exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries from 1924 and in Copenhagen, The Hague, Madrid and Tokyo (1928). The son of a banker, living comfortably on his annuities, Jean Dreyfus-Stern is not in the financial need to sell his paintings, nor is he concerned about becoming a celebrity. This "grand bourgeois" had no need to exhibit (even if after his participation in the Salon des artistes décorateurs in 1925 his works, which were widely and laudably noticed by the world of art critics at the time, were presented in Madrid, Copenhagen, The Hague, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro), confirms Gérald Schurr, thus explaining the oblivion that the sale of his studio in 1981 would bring to light. If, in Jean Dreyfus-Stern's landscapes (notably of Brittany and Honfleur), "the colours are frank as in the works of his friend Louis Neillot", he is also one of the rare artists of his time to have invested the worlds of circus (Acrobats in the spotlight) and sport (Cycling peloton, Running finish).
