VERY EXCEPTIONAL AND ORIGINAL SIDEBOARD... - Lot 133 - Paris Oise Enchères
VERY EXCEPTIONAL AND ORIGINAL SIDEBOARD TWO BODIES IN OAK MOULDING Pyramidal in shape, it rests on four massive octagonal legs. It is composed of three parts, the lower part with a drawer along the whole length, topped by a two-part dresser, each opening with a leaf. This ensemble bears an important openwork credenza comprising two grotesque bearers each supporting a niche closed by a leaf. The whole is topped by an important trapezoidal cornice dominated in its central part by a capital forming a cottage roof. This piece of furniture is decorated with a rich and amusing decoration of iridescent enamelled sandstone in low relief and in the round, illustrating different episodes of a village festival or a wedding. The drawer of the lower part is decorated with two plaques in low relief. The one on the left represents a man pulling a pig and the one on the right a man pulling a sheep; the two animals are about to be "prepared" for the meal.these two panels are separated by a handle in the form of a hand holding a key (probably the one of the young household). The two panels of the sideboard are also decorated with a bas-relief each with a group of characters. The two bride and groom are probably on the right-hand panel, where a young woman wearing a veil and a crown can be seen. Between the two panels, each of which is flanked by a sheaf of wheat placed on the uprights, is a stork (one of the symbols of Alsace). Above, on the rounded front corners of the top, are the busts of a young woman on the left and a young man on the right, which can be seen as the young couple and/or the sponsor of the piece of furniture. The doors of the niches of the credenza are also decorated with bas-reliefs. On the left panel, two old women are seen in the foreground, while in the background some people are dancing. On the right panel, men are drinking and in the background a woman brings a pig's head. The left panel is framed by a trophy of the products of the earth with woodcock and mushrooms; and the right panel by a trophy of the products of the sea with fish and crayfish. The cornice is decorated with several plates with a frieze of hens, roosters and ducks. The roof is topped by a rooster. It may refer to one of the symbols of France. This may suggest a political message, as a claim to be FRENCH. Indeed at that time Alsace was German territory. Most of the stoneware is monogrammed A de F for Agnès de Frumerie (1869-1937). This piece of furniture can be an order for an inn, a restaurant or a private order as a wedding gift. Alsatian or German work around 1895 296 x 198 x 66 cm Condition of use and maintenance, cracks, restorations. Agnès de Frumerie is a French sculptor and ceramist of Swedish origin, born in Skövde (Sweden) in 1869 and died in Sweden in 1937.
