attributed to Willem Van HERP (1614 - 1677) The judgment of Cambyses Canvas Height : 131 cm Width : 179 cm Old restorations and accidents The original by Rubens was formerly kept at the Hôtel de ville in Brussels, burnt down in 1695; a studio version at the Château de Sans-souci, Potsdam version in the Château de Sans-souci, Potsdam, (220 x 274 cm); a version by Beschey in the Musée de Bergues Bergues; a version by Hendrik (? sic) van Herp II, lost (137 x 183 cm). A version by van Herp sold in Paris (Tajan) on June 23, 1997, no. 68 (canvas 178 x 226). The subject is taken from Herodotus, V.25 Cambyses, king of the Medes and Persians (6th century) punishes a corrupt judge with death. His body, flayed, is then and used to make the seat of the throne of justice. Cambyses appointed the judge's son in his father's stead, enjoining him never to forget what the seat was made of.
