Painted for the 1937 International Exhibition, it was a monumental commission for the curved wall of the hall of the Palais de la Lumière et de l'Électricité, built by Robert Mallet-Stevens on the Champ-de-Mars. The composition features an anthology of characters, ranging from scientists of the time and of the past, to modern uses of the fairy, and all the way back to Zeus, powering a generator with his lightning.
