RABBIT" SCULPTURE by François POMPON (1855-1933) - Lot 226
RABBIT" SCULPTURE by François POMPON (1855-1933) Original white Carrara marble sculpture of a rabbit, signed on the side. Enclosed is a letter written and signed by the artist, dated January 23, 1931, framed under glass, offering this white marble rabbit for the wedding of Mrs. Geneviève Levallet and Mr. Hans Haug. Attached is a letter from Mme Levallet's family stating that they received this sculputre directly from Mme Geneviève Levallet dated April 22, 2015. Dim : 16 x 11.5 x 4.5 cm approx. Good condition Provenance: This small marble rabbit was given to Mme Geneviève Levallet directly by François Pompon as a wedding gift. A small note accompanies the rabbit, dated January 23, 1931, written and signed in Pompon's hand, stating that he offered this small white marble rabbit, together with a carrier pigeon, in thanks for the support and congratulations on the marriage of Mme Levallet to Mr Hans Haug on February 5, 1931. This piece is therefore unique. Mme Geneviève Levallet, who was curator of a private collection, was curator of the private art collection of Baron Robert de Rothschild (1880-1946). As curator, she managed Baron Robert de Rothschild's important art collection, which included pieces of Meissen porcelain and master paintings. She was well known in art-historical circles, and was instrumental in documenting and promoting the art treasures of the Paris branch of the Rothschild family. In 1931, she married Hans Haug, the renowned curator of the Musée de Strasbourg. François Pompon offered this rabbit to thank Mme Levallet and Mr Hans Haug for having introduced him to a number of art lovers and collectors, notably Princess Semiha (1889-1894). It remained in the family until the 1980s, when Mme Geneviève Levallet gave it to a family member before her death in 1984.
