LARGE LOUIS XVI BRANDED DRESSER RIESENER MODEL With a central overhang and curved sides, opening on the front with two large drawers without crossbars and three drawers on the sides. With uprights with cut-out sides. Inlaid with veneer with diamond and flower motifs and a central fruit and flower vase composition. Very high quality chasing and gilding. Rich ormolu ornamentation composed of framing fillets, plant friezes and clogs. Top of purple marble. 19th century period. H : 91 x W : 171 x D : 63 cm use and maintenance restorations. Jean-Henri Riesener, French cabinetmaker of German origin (born in 1734 in Gladbeck, Westphalia, and died in Paris in 1806). Received as master in 1768, he was appointed "ordinary cabinetmaker to the king" in 1774 and, during the years 1769 to 1784, supplied the court and the royal family - notably Queen Marie-Antoinette of Austria - with sumptuous furniture in the neo-classical style. He is considered one of the best representatives of the transition style and in 1769 completed Louis XV's famous cylinder secretary, or "King's Office", begun by Oeben nine years earlier. This chest of drawers is similar in design to the so-called "Concordat" chest of drawers made for Louis XVI. This remarkable piece escaped the torments of the Revolution and was reintegrated into the furniture of the Fontainebleau castle in 1804 to furnish the room of Pope Pius VII who was staying there on the occasion of Napoleon's coronation.
