In 1856 Hendrik Willem married the daughter of a rich Mennonite wood merchant, Sientje van Houten, and when they inherited Klaas' fortune, the couple devoted themselves to painting, Hendrik ending his career in banking. Hendrik Willem's brother is the painter Taco Mesdag. On the advice of Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Hendrik studies in Brussels with Willem Roelofs. In 1868, during a trip, he discovers the seascapes of northern Germany and decides to specialise in seascapes. He frequented a group of painters in The Hague, which later became known as the Hague School. He settled in this city in 1868 where he took advantage of the proximity of the sea. In 1870, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and won a gold medal for Les Brisants de la mer du Nord. This launched his career on the international scene. He joined the Fine Arts Society of The Hague, the "Pulchri Studio", of which he was elected president in 1889. In 1903 Mesdag bequeaths his house in Laan Van Meerdervoort and his collection of paintings to the Netherlands. His house is now a museum that bears his name, De Mesdag Collectie, separate from the Mesdag Panorama and his gallery of paintings. This museum is famous for its paintings by Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Constant Troyon, Théodore Rousseau...
