Georges Antoine ROCHEGROSSE - Lot 147
Georges Antoine ROCHEGROSSE TABLE "WOMAN'S OUTDOOR PORTRAIT" by Georges Antoine ROCHEGROSSE (1859-1938) Oil signed and dated 1899 on the upper right. 46 x 38 cm He began his training as a painter with Alfred Dehodencq, then in 1871 he entered the Académie Julian in Paris in the studios of Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger, and completed his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He competed unsuccessfully twice for the Prix de Rome in 1880 and 1881, and made his debut at the 1882 Salon where he was awarded a medal. The following year, he was awarded a scholarship for a study trip that enabled him to travel all over Europe. At the beginning of his career, he practiced history painting and tried his hand at symbolism. A painter recognized and appreciated by good society, Rochegrosse was named Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1892. Then he turned to orientalism when he discovered Algeria in 1894. In 1905, he was a professor at the Académie Druet, founded in Paris in 1904 by the painter Antoine Druet (1857-1921). Admired by his contemporaries, in particular his father-in-law Theodore de Banville and Conan Doyle, he was an influential member of the Society of French Orientalist Painters. Rochegrosse exhibited not only in Paris, but also at the Salon des artistes algériens and chaired the jury of the Union artistique de l'Afrique du Nord from 1925, as well as the Syndicat professionnel des artistes algériens. Following the death of his wife in 1920, his painting took a more pessimistic turn, tinged with religiosity. He draws more and more inspiration from the garden of his Algerian villa. He died in Algiers in 1937.
