Jean MIOTTE - Lot 262
Jean MIOTTE LITHOGRAPHY "CONTESTATION" OF Jean MIOTTE (1926-2016) Signed lower right and numbered 131/150 At sight: 71 x 53.5 cm After studying mathematics, he decided to devote himself to painting. He painted his first paintings based on nature and imaginative compositions in 1945, and in 1947 he began to attend the workshops in Montparnasse; the workshops of Othon Friesz, Ossip Zadkine. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1953, which he would later attend every year. In 1957, lyrical spontaneity and gushing writing take precedence over his formal research, everything becomes movement to reach the sign in monochromy. But from 1959, he returned to polychromy with dynamic achievements. From 1962 onwards, he tends towards a more descriptive graphic design, accentuating contrasts and widening the space. In 1975, he returned to a great sobriety of colours, to a rhythmic interference of colours or to a rhythmic interference of planes where white dominates. In 1976, he adopts gouache, Kraft collage and newsprint, following the development and outcome of a series of researches. The Jean Miotte Foundation was opened in New York in 2002, with a permanent collection of his works.
