Augustus Charles PUGIN CHARMING LITTLE AQUARELLE "VIEW OF LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON" BY Augustus Charles PUGIN (1769-1832) Watercolor drawing and gouache highlights signed and dated 1811 in the middle left in an architectural element. Sight : 14,5 x 21,5 cm Augustus Charles Pugin, born in Paris in 1762 or 1769 and died in Bloomsbury on December 19, 1832, was an English architect and draughtsman of Franco-Swiss origin. He is best known for his work as an architectural draughtsman. Born in France but the son of a Swiss man, Auguste Pugin emigrated during the Revolution to England, where he trained from 1792 at the Royal Academy and with the engraver Jacques Mérigot. He first worked under John Nash, the regent's favourite architect, and then worked mainly as a draughtsman, illustrating architectural books, especially for the bookseller and publisher Rudolph Ackermann. In Islington he married a Puritan woman of letters, Catherine Welby, a relative of Baronet William Welby of Denton, Lincolnshire. An honorary member of the Society of Antiquaries of Normandy, Pugin contributed to the rediscovery of the Gothic style and to the development of the Neo-Gothic, of which his son, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, was one of the greatest specialists. Among Pugin's pupils were his son and the architects Thomas Amos and Joseph Nash.
