ANTILLES - SAINT DOMINGUE - Part of the Cape, Parish of VERR - Lot 8
ANTILLES - SAINT DOMINGUE - Part of the Cape, Parish of VERRETTES. MANUSCRIT XVIII° - MEMORANDUM - FOR ; " the Sirs and Ladies Nougués, the Lady Nougués, duly authorized, or her Mary entant que de besoin, is or will be an inhabitant of NAZES. The Sieur PAYEN lainé inhabitant of the district of NAZES, and Jean PAYEN BOISSAIS, inhabitant of La Ravine Seiche". "All of them live in ........ heirs of Dame Marie SAUNIER, widow of Claude Bidonne, Knight of the Royal Military Order of St. Louis, Captain of the Cavalry of the militia, living in the district of Artibonite, calling for the celebration of the marriage between the said Dame SAUNIER, widow of BRIDONNE, and Sieur Jean Baptiste de CASTERA, Knight of the Royal Military Order of St. Louis, Lieutenant Colonel of the Infantry, Brigadier of the King's Armies, employed in SAINT DOMINGUE. The appellants contest: "the alleged dispensations granted by Father ESTACHON, on March 7, 1763, and the permission to celebrate their marriage in the house of the Lady Saunier...". "Declares this marriage invalid and void as to its civil effects. In addition, to annul the donation made in the marriage contract between the Sieur de Castera and the Dame Saunier on March 5, 1763, before the March 5, 1763, before the Sénéchaussée of St Marc, (ceding) in favour of the Sr de Castera, the totality of his goods, movable and immovable...". This long document is entirely devoted to the procedures used by the Sieur de Castera to take control of the property of the Dame Saunier, and to those deployed by the heirs of a first bed, to prevent him from doing so and to preserve their rights. To understand the situation, it is necessary to specify that the Lady in question had been impotent for several years, was seventy-eight years old, and had a considerable fortune. This document sheds light on the behaviour of many adventurers, who went to the islands to make their fortune by any means necessary. Manuscript in-folio of 92 pages. Well readable, some light spotting.
