VERY NICE TABULATION "GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION IN GREY CAMAÏEU" - Lot 234
VERY NICE TABULATION "GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION IN GREY CAMAÏEU" by Jean SIGNOVERT (1919-1981) Oil on canvas Signed lower right and dated 72 73 x 92 cm Condition of use and maintenance, small chips Jean Signovert entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne in 1943. His friend Roger Chastel introduced him to Aimé Maeght, who immediately exhibited his work in his new gallery. Mastering drawing and engraving, Signovert quickly penetrates the world of artists (Georges Braque, Jacques Villon, Henri Laurens, Alberto Giacometti, Nicolas de Staël, Alexander Calder, Roger Bissière, Jean Arp...) as well as writers (Francis Ponge, Pierre Reverdy, René Char...) Is formed a group of young abstract painters and sculptors that Maeght will regularly exhibit under the name of "Dazzled Hands". The gallery launches a periodical magazine entitled "Behind the mirror" whose No. 59, published in 1957, will be enriched with original lithographs by Jean Signovert. Signovert also devoted himself to printing the engravings of, among others, Georges Braque, Jean Arp, Maurice Estève, Serge Poliakoff and Olivier Debré. In 1980, he was appointed professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, a position he unfortunately did not have time to hold, dying shortly after the opening of his studio.
