André MAIRE (1898-1984) The sacred elephants... - Lot 234 - Paris Oise Enchères
André MAIRE (1898-1984) The sacred elephants in Madurai Oil on canvas of origin Signed lower left 123 x 157 cm Through his training at the art school of the Place des Vosges, André Maire met the symbolist painter Emile Bernard who advised him to join the colonial infantry to discover the world. Without knowing it yet, this was the birth of a great traveler artist. Maire left for Indochina in 1918 and taught drawing there. Four years later, he married Bernard's daughter in Venice. He traveled to Africa after receiving the grand prize of the AOF in 1946 and returned to Asia for ten years before joining Madagascar in 1959. This large-format canvas presents a peaceful scene with elephants, perfectly integrated into local daily life. The majesty of the pachyderms responds to that of the temples in the background. A soft and bewitching light embraces the exotic vegetation, as well as the men and animals, and reinforces the mirror effect of the water, only disturbed by the confident steps of the animals. In the foreground, a dozen farmers enjoy the coolness near zebus.
