H : 91 x W : 57 x D : 57 cm Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené (Paris 1748-1803) was a Parisian joiner of chairs, chauffeuse, cabriolet, armchair, bergère, sofa and daybed. Like most 18th-century chair carpenters, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené came from a family that had long belonged to the guild: his grandfather Jean, his father Claude I (1724-1792) and his brother Claude II (master in 1769), all practiced the same profession. Jean-Baptiste was born in Paris in 1748, and became a master on May 10, 1769. Six months later, he established himself in the carpentry and woodcarving district, under the sign of the "Gros Chapelet", rue de Cléry in Paris. By 1784, his reputation was such that, along with Georges Jacob, Boulard and François II Foliot, he was a regular supplier to the Garde-Meuble. He produced some of the most sumptuous seating furniture for the royal residences. In 1789, for example, under the direction of architect Jean-Jacques Huvé, he supplied all the furniture for the Château de Montreuil given by Louis XVI to Madame Élisabeth, designing particularly refined voyeuse chairs for the salon turc.
