Émile Edmont Peynot trained in Pierre Robinet's studio before joining François Jouffroy's in 1870 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1880, he won numerous medals at the Salon des artistes français and at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He received numerous commissions for public monuments. Literature on the artist mentions a plaster figure entitled Pureté at the 1896 Salon (no. 3748), which may be similar to our marble. The Musée de Sens holds a photograph taken in the artist's studio, showing the model of our work in the background.
