PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN WITH A BIRD" by Edouard DUBUFFE (1820-1883) Oil on canvas in a gilded wood frame The subject is dressed in an elegant suit, his vest trimmed with pleating on the sleeves and bib, and gold buttons. The collar of his white shirt frames his childlike face, tenderized by the bird on his finger. Dated lower left "1840". 68 x 57 cm Sold by designation Dubufe trained early on with his father, the great painter Claude-Marie Dubufe, and then at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts, notably with Paul Delaroche from 1834. After painting numerous religious and historical scenes, he became the official portraitist of the Second Empire. His portrait of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie is one of the paintings that made him famous. He exhibited at the Salons from 1839 and at the 1878 Universal Exhibition. His work can be found in the museums of Dijon, Versailles, Orsay and Compiègne.
