SCULPTURE "PORTRAIT FORMISTE DE LOUIS MARCOUSSIS" by Auguste - Lot 190
SCULPTURE "PORTRAIT FORMISTE DE LOUIS MARCOUSSIS" by Auguste ZAMOYSKI (1893-1970) Black patina bronze, after the 1923 model Signed and stamped "cire perdue C. Valsuani" on the back, Posthumous casting 20th century Expert : Mr Zagrodzki H : 29,5 cm Small scratches, small dent This is one of the most synthetic portraits by Zamoyski, who, while pushing the stylization of his effigies to the extreme, knew how to retain the characteristic features of his models. The sculpture on display is a posthumous cast, as we know of no bronze versions from the Formista period. We do know that the original version was made by Zamoyski in black patinated plaster in 1923, with another portrait carved in stone the following year. Late editions, mainly by renowned foundrymen, fill this gap in the artist's heritage, especially given that he destroyed many of the works from this important period in his career. Born into a large aristocratic family, a man of many talents and passions, August Zamoyski remains above all one of Poland's greatest sculptors. Remaining one of the key figures of the Formist movement, he later returned to a more classical expression. Settling in Paris in 1924, he frequented the bohemian milieu of Montparnasse. He won the Grand Prix at the 1925 and 1937 International Exhibitions. After a long stay in Brazil, he returned to France and continued to work in his studio in Saint-Clar-de-Rivière. All these works have recently been transferred to the National Museum in Warsaw.
