TWO-LEAF CONSOLE TABLE by Marcel COARD (1889-1975) - Lot 137
TWO-LEAF CONSOLE TABLE by Marcel COARD (1889-1975) Partially gilded iron structure, with Greek decoration on each corner of the girdle, sheath legs joined by a crotch shelf enriched with Greek motifs, ver-de-mer marble tops. Table signed Dim: Height 76.5 Width 93 Length 174 Use and maintenance restorations, very slight chips on the gilded patina. Marcel Coard was spotted in 1914 by Jacques Doucet, who took several novice designers under his wing. Doucet helped him emerge on the scene by commissioning an interior that impressed many. In addition to his interest in primitive art, Marcel Coard's work is also influenced by Cubism. Coard's modern creations take on striking new forms, sometimes even geometrical, and often very fine lines. This aesthetic gives the artist's creations a particularly elegant appearance. Marcel Coard is imbued with the bold nuances of Cubist painters such as Picasso and Rousseau. In keeping with his avant-garde iconography, Marcel Coard uses noble, precious materials. Macassar ebony, mother-of-pearl, snakeskin, tinted mirror and shagreen are just some of the exotic materials the designer likes to exploit in his work. Thanks to these new textures, Marcel Coard experiments with unprecedented visual and tactile effects. He has also experimented with the technique of covering surfaces (ring, canvas, table, etc.) with crushed, particle-like eggshells. Throughout his career, the designer has succeeded in creating surprise in each of his works. The combination of his primitive and cubist influences and his mastery of avant-garde techniques are what make Marcel Coard's work so recognizable.
