BRONZE "MATERNITÉ ÉLÉPHANT" by Paul SIMON (1892-1979) - Lot 263
BRONZE "MATERNITÉ ÉLÉPHANT" by Paul SIMON (1892-1979) Red patina bronze representing an elephant and her calf, model created circa 1945-50 Signed, numbered 7/8 and founder's stamp "Clémenti cire perdue". Posthumous casting 29 x 38 x 20 cm From an early age, Simon was immersed in the world of the arts. From 1929 onwards, he created sculptures that met with immediate success; terracottas, then bronzes of animals observed at length and passionately during visits to the Jardin des Plantes. A whole bestiary passed through his hands; elephants, panthers, lions, rhinoceroses, donkeys, camels, monkeys, bisons... and always his delicate animal maternities, which he transcribed with great tenderness.
