Among the many examples, interesting comparisons with the figures that appear in the paintings Les Sabines and Léonidas aux Thermopyles, preserved in the Louvre.
Alongside Antonio Canova and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, he was one of the leading exponents of the neoclassical movement in European art between the 16th and 19th centuries.
Born into the petit bourgeoisie, he trained in the studio of Joseph-Marie Vien. In 1769, he won third prize in the Prix de quartier, which enabled him to compete for the Prix de Rome.
Between 1775 and 1780, he lived in Rome, where he furthered his studies of antique sculpture and was fascinated by Renaissance and Baroque painting, particularly Raphael, to such an extent that his style took on a Neoclassical tone.
A fervent revolutionary, he portrayed Napoleon's deeds in images. His art has gone down in history, and the École de David was already in use in the early 19th century, considering both his direct pupils and the painters around him, including Jean-Germain Drouais, Antoine-Jean Gros, François Gérard, Anne-Louis Girodet, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Jean-Pierre Franque, Jérôme-Martin Langlois and Jean-Baptiste Joseph Wicar.
