Maximilien Luce, known as one of the most famous exponents of Neo-Impressionism, was born in Paris in 1858.
After training as an engraver and then as a painter by trade, he devoted himself to painting, taking various drawing courses - notably at the Arts Décoratifs - and studying under Carolus-Duran.
In 1884, the first Salon des Indépendants enabled him to confront the emerging neo-Impressionism movement, led by Georges Seurat.
This application of color in juxtaposed strokes on canvas, inherited from the lessons and theories of Goethe and Charles Henry, won over Luce's sensibility.
The optical blending of tones replaces that which painters had previously used on the palette, giving compositions an unprecedented luminosity.
In 1887, after adopting the Divisionist technique, he met members of this movement such as Luce, Seurat, Signac and Pissarro.
