KIZIM-OUCHAK CARPET (CAUCASUS-ARMENIA/KARABAGH-ARTSAKH), LAT - Lot 282
KIZIM-OUCHAK CARPET (CAUCASUS-ARMENIA/KARABAGH-ARTSAKH), LATE 19TH CENTURY. Wool pile on wool foundation. In the center of this rug, a cruciform brick counter-field, highlighted in old gold and adorned with flowers, hooked caissons and "branches of life", hosts a large, stylized arachnid form in ivory, celadon, brick and sky. Each bluish end features angular ivory chevrons with "scolopendres" (dragon symbols). They are interspersed with flowers, trees of life and stylized floral corollas. The frame features an ivory border with a succession of multicolored Medes stars. Two-tone positive/negative serrated highlights. A fine example of Armenian craftsmanship.
