Exhibition catalog at the National Museum in Warsaw. Anna Lipa, August Zamoyski. Myslec w Kamieniu. Nie tylko z Archwum, Muzeum Literatury, Warsaw 2019, reprinted on p. 423 (original plaster cast) The sculpture depicts Antoni Slonimski (1895–1976), an eminent author, poet, and journalist known for his absurd sense of humor and as a co-founder of the avant-garde poetry group Skamander. It is practically the last portrait in the spirit of Formism created by Zamoyski before he moved toward a more classical style. It is also the most caricatured, which seems to illustrate the sometimes strained relationship between the artist and his subject. This sculpture is also part of the “double portraits” series, in which Zamoyski approaches the subject in two ways: one realistic, the other featuring a maximal distortion of his model’s face. The realistic version is known only through archival photographs. August Zamoyski, a long-forgotten artist who, according to some experts, deserves a place among the greatest of his generation—such as Lipschitz, Zadkine, or Laurens—is returning to the forefront. The joint initiative undertaken by the Museum of Literature and the National Museum in Warsaw, titled “The Zamoyski Project,” has advanced research on his work. Furthermore, his presence on the art market has helped raise public awareness of this artist.
