TABLE "THE DEATH OF THE TOREADOR" by Marcel DYF (1899-1985) Oil on cardboard signed lower right 46 x 38 cm Marcel Dyf, pseudonym of Marcel Dreyfus, born in Paris on October 7, 1899 and died in Bois d'Arcy on September 15, 1985, is a French painter. He showed an early ability for drawing and painting. Following a stay in Morocco for port construction work, he is seduced by light and landscapes. He then decides to devote himself to painting. In 1923, he settled in the South of France, in Arles and then in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where he stayed for about twenty years. His pictorial work includes scenes of popular life and folklore from Arles and the Camargue. In particular, he painted the frescoes for the town halls of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Saint-Martin-de-Crau. During the Second World War, he joined the resistance in the maquis, then the war ended and he divided his time between his studio in Paris and the South of France. In Cannes in 1954, he married Claudine. In 1959, he moved to the Paris region to Bois d'Arcy where he worked until his death. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, the Salon d'automne and the Salon des Tuileries and on the French Riviera. From 1955, he is represented by the Frost and Reed Gallery in London, which still exhibits his works. From 1956, his better recognized talent leads him on the international scene.
