Died in 1918. 19th century. French. Painter of genre, landscape, still life, flowers, caricature. In spite of his preference for a military career, he was sent; in 1853, to the school of Fine Arts of Lyon where he studied under Vibert, Reignier, then L. Guy. Admitted first of all in the engraving workshop, he continued his studies in the flower class, before becoming a factory designer. He took part in the Lyon Salon from 1876 and in the Paris Salon from 1870. In 1876, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a decorator, and then, for three years, as a ceramist. He returned to Lyon in 1884 to succeed Reignier as a teacher of drawing and painting flowers and composition applied to fabric. Apart from his floral compositions, Castex-Dégrange was the author of genre scenes, decorative works, notably for the town hall of Lyon and the Rhône prefecture, caricatures and landscapes. However, the painter of flowers par excellence, renewing this art by giving it a new decorative style, with a vigorous touch, in rich and luminous colours that go hand in hand with the prosperity and the silk industry.
