Henri Julien DUMONT
VERY INTERESTING NATURALIST PAINTING "NATURE MORTE AUX PIVOINES" BY Henri Julien DUMONT (1859-1921) Oil on canvas signed lower right Size : 106 x 77 cm Very nice frame in stuccoed wood with laurels Henri Julien Dumont, known as a painter of flowers, exhibited successively at the Artistes français, the Salon de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Indépendants. At the end of the 1870s, he frequented the Montmartre milieu and made friends with Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Gervex and Edgar Degas: he was a regular at the café Le Laroche, located at the end of the rue Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. He then took a studio at 11 boulevard de Clichy. His first paintings are in the impressionist spirit. Henri Dumont, who was close to the Montmartre nightlife, painted many portraits of actors, which he signed "Henry". He also painted portraits of William Busnach and Jean-Louis Dubut de Laforest. He frequented Jean Lorrain, who dedicated a poem to him. According to Vollard, Dumont called himself a free thinker and his associations attest to this. After beginning with a series of paintings inspired by Montmartre and Parisian pleasures, and producing a few etchings and posters, Dumont turned to painting flowers around 1897-1900, a style that he was to love for the rest of his life. In October-November 1905, he was part of a delegation of French painters exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago: Dumont showed several canvases, mainly of flowers, a style that would become his trademark. In 1908, the Gobelins factory commissioned him, through Gustave Geffroy, to paint several cartoons for tapestries. From 1911 onwards, he was regularly exhibited by Georges Petit, who remained faithful to him until the 1930s. In May 1914, he received a medal at the international exhibition in Ghent, then he was named knight of the Legion of Honour, sponsored by the painter Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola.
