AMERICA - DUPONT de NEMOURS - LETTER from Mr. DUPONT, to Mr. - Lot 290
AMERICA - DUPONT de NEMOURS - LETTER from Mr. DUPONT, to Mr. PETION (April 13, An IV, 16 pages), and REPLY from Mr. PETION (19 pages). Booklet in-8 of 35 pages in total. Pierre Du Pont de Nemours, ennobled by Louis XVI, is in 1789, Deputy to the States General for the bailiwick of Nemours. Favorable to the beginning of the Revolution, his loyalty to King Louis XVI, whom he physically defended, with his son Eleuthère, during the siege of the Tuileries by the crowd, on August 10, 1792, earned him the hatred of the revolutionaries. Condemned to death during the Terror, the fall of Robespierre saved him from execution. His house is plundered during the coup d'état of 1797. In 1800, he emigrated to the United States with his family. A friend of Thomas Jefferson, and in contact with the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte, he was at the origin of the purchase of Louisiana by the United States in 1803, and participated in numerous negotiations between the two countries. His son, Eleuthère Irénée, founded a gunpowder factory in 1802, which gave birth to a worldwide industrial giant that is still powerful today.
