TABLEAU "COMPOSITION" by Louis LATAPIE (1891-1972) Oil on paper mounted on canvas, framed, signed upper left Signed and dated "62" on back Size: 70 x 55 cm approx. Good condition A major French painter on the XXᵉ century art scene, Louis Latapie (Toulouse, 1891 - Avignon, 1972) is part of the history of modern art, cubism and modernist figuration. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris from 1910, he also attended the Académie Julian and then the Académie Ranson, where he discovered Cubist research with Paul Sérusier. Latapie was soon integrated into the Parisian artistic milieu of Montparnasse, where he rubbed shoulders and befriended several major avant-garde figures, including Georges Braque, one of the founders of Cubism, as well as Roger Bissière, Jean Metzinger, Jacques Villon and Max Jacob. In the 1920s, Latapie participated fully in the artistic effervescence of the time, exhibiting at various salons and galleries. In 1923, together with Georges Braque, Bissière and Ozenfant, he founded the "Castors de Montsouris" association, a group of artists wishing to create modern house-workshops inspired by Cubist aesthetics.
